- Summary:
- Lizette is hesitant to attend a family gathering because she does not want to be around her mother. Lizette’s hesitation seems to stem from the blame she places on her mother for the sexual abuse she experienced as a child. The provider asks a series of questions to gather information and delineate whether her mother is to blame for any aspect of the abuse. Based on Lizette’s responses, it does not appear that the mother had any foreknowledge to prevent the abuse and responded swiftly to keep her safe once she found out about the abuse. When questioned, Lizette is unable to identify any objective ways that she thinks her mother could have, or should have, prevented, or reacted to the abuse differently, indicating that the blame she places on her mother is displaced.
