"Letters addressed to John Murray III which touch upon Layard's travels in Italy and Spain, hotels and suggestions for "the Handbook", or "Murray's Handbooks for Travellers". Discusses Spanish politics and the "Turkish question". Also includes comments on the proofs of an article for the "Quarterly Review" on Diego Velázquez. One letter includes an "attack" on the Athenaeum Club, while others mention Livingstone, Murchison and Gladstone, proofs, and the capitulation of Paris at the close of the Franco-Prussian War. Letters are arranged chronologically."
