Your time at university can be an opportunity to develop yourself professionally and personally and find new ways to pay attention to your well-being. It can also be a time to re-develop yourself if you are returning to study after some time away. Whatever you are hoping to achieve with, and through, your new opportunities, it is important to remember you are the person driving these changes and developments. At university you will be viewed and treated as the adult you are and so you have to ensure you take responsibility for your development and your physical and mental health and well-being. Some days you may not have the energy, or wish, to keep pursuing your development and well-being, and that's OK. If it does happen, however, try to make sure that feeling doesn't last too long. One way to do this is to ensure you have engaged with all of the support departments as soon as possible at your university. If you start to struggle, then ask for help. There will probably be many people employed at your university to help you along your journey, but they will often only be able to help if you advise them you need them to. Part of your development is about willingness to participate in what is available at university. You do not have to join every society or group. However, if you are willing to engage in new experiences and opportunities, even just a little bit outside of your comfort zone, then you might find other people will be willing to include you more readily in societies and fun opportunities. This can be a really fun time filled with expectation and dreams of possibilities for the future; however, that is not the case for everyone. Some people can feel apprehensive and anxious about starting their university journey, and that is what this skill is here to help you overcome. It won't get rid of all of your nerves completely - that will only happen over time - but it can help you be more prepared and ready to start your studies with a strong sense of the space you'll be inhabiting at university, and some top tips on how to turn possible hurdles into positive opportunities.
