- Summary:
- The decision-making process consists of a range of factors that influence the choices made. Within the sphere of these direct and indirect influences is information, which can stem from different sources (e.g., internal, external) and reflect a variety of types (e.g., data, experience, feedback). Decision-making is a large domain that can get complex as the number of variables and weightage of each change; decision-making can be subjective or objective within the context of the decision. By drawing attention to these factors, you may be able to effectively navigate the decision-making process in a timelier and data-informed manner. The intention of this set of topics is to introduce a data-informed decision-making process with a simple dataset within a scenario-based learning environment to trigger your interests within this domain. The scenario is that you are the head of a toy-making manufacturer and you've heard complaints from your female employees that male employees are being paid more than female employees. In order to examine the validity of this complaint, you will harvest and clean data on your employees, their levels of experience and education as well as how much they are currently paid in Dataset Preliminaries. Next, you will analyze the dataset to see whether there is pay discrimination based on gender in your company and decide what steps should be taken to remedy the situation in Decision-Making Informed by Data. Finally, in Communicating the Decision, Analyzing the Effect of the Decision, and Continual Improvement, you will explore how to communicate the decision to the employees in your toy-making company as well as how to measure whether your decisions are having the desired effect. Note that the topics in this module are not completely self-contained. In order to understand each topic, you need to have studied the previous topic as the module builds chronologically through the topics using the same running example.
