- Summary:
- Learning in university takes place in many more places and manners than you might assume. Virtually every experience you have with the people and organizations you will encounter has a measurable impact on the quality of your higher education. This skills section is intended to encourage students to go beyond passive acceptance of education or as simply occurring in the classroom. It is designed to show you how to make the most of regular study situations, how non-faculty can be invaluable educators, and how you can practice (and develop) workplace skills here and now. The section Making Seminars Work is all about how to take control over your learning instead of simply relying on others to "tell" you what you should know. When you're able to prepare, experience, and then review each session in the classroom, in a tutorial, or a peer-learning session, you can move beyond surface-level learning to a deep understanding. Interestingly, research on learning tells us repeatedly that the time you spend on preparing and reviewing (or studying) isn't the most important factor in determining success. It's all about what you spend your time doing. The cliché, "work smarter, not harder" is indeed true, and the section on "Active Learning in Context" will provide you with a head-start on the process. One special note on the topic Demystifying Disability: this topic isn't about active learning per se; rather it is about what is needed as the baseline environment needed for all learners to allow for active learning to take place. If you're battling access to the course materials, becoming an "active reader" isn't possible-this topic aims to elevate this point for all those who might assume that they do not deserve or merit such a baseline. The section Benefitting From Your Educators asks you to broaden what you might think of as your teachers at university. There are so many offices, organizations, and non-faculty personnel on campus that can be as, if not more helpful for your academic and career success. The section introduces you to some of these people and resources and provides a glimpse into how they can translate your current and developing skillsets into ones desired by employers. The section Working on Campus is about the ways that co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities on campus can be considered as essential parts of your university life. While it may seem that courses and studying is all-encompassing, the truth is that those who can balance academics and social life develop more desirable traits for employers, and more importantly, report greater personal satisfaction with their university experience. This section focuses on how working on campus, finding leadership roles in clubs, and becoming politically active, help maximize all your university opportunities.
