- Summary:
- We are living in an increasingly data-centric world, where it is essential for everyone to have statistical awareness and build upon their statistical senses. The need for statistics has never been greater. With rapidly changing times, and a world saturated with data and interesting variables, we need new ways and new ideas to help make statistics more accessible for everyone. Nothing illustrates the need for statistical and data science literacy more than the current COVID-19 pandemic. Data are presented daily with respect to the number of cases, the number of hospitalizations, the number of deaths, and the number of vaccinations for different countries, regions, and cities. Naturally, people want to see how their region compares with others or use it to make decisions about, for example, whether to get vaccinated, when to wear a mask, or where to travel. Being able to understand how to present, visualize, and communicate data is an important set of abilities that will be developed in the topics covered in this Skill. Data about individual cases can be interesting; however, we're often interested in summarizing data: an average, for example, or the number of cases that fall into a particular category. This Skill will guide you to explore various ways of summarizing data, including the advantages and downfalls of using each type. This Skill will not involve any proofs, but rather will focus more on the essential numeracy skills needed to help understand the key ideas included. The goal is for you to be able to correctly select the appropriate methods needed to summarize data that you may encounter in your studies or other contexts, for example, recognizing that people talking about the average annual income are not referring to the same thing as people talking about median annual income. You will also begin to develop your skills in being able to scrutinize data, thinking about how it's presented, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using different plots. This Skill will also help you to build on your critical thinking skills, getting you to scratch below the numbers being presented to you, and encouraging you to ask relevant questions to further extend your understanding of what is being presented. As your confidence beings to grow, you will become much more comfortable exploring data. After completing this Skill, you will also become confident with interpreting simple data displays, along with the associated techniques to summarize data. Although this Skill will not teach you how to produce data or use statistical inference techniques, it will help you to identify patterns, and explain and explore basic trends in data, across a broad range of disciplines.
