- Summary:
- The executive committee of a university-based medical center is meeting to discuss what to do about existing and future relationships with a prominent benefactor whose recent actions have resulted in public embarrassment, shame, and ridicule. Members of the committee are highly animated about what to do about gifts that the benefactor and his family have made to the medical center and university over many years. Three potential options have been identified for the committee to consider: (a) defer making a decision and send the matter to the university board of governors; (b) proceed with a firm recommendation that signals the seriousness of the matter and the explicit intent of the committee or; (c) hold-off on making a decision until more information is collected. While sentiments about the matter are keenly felt by members of the committee, there is no clear consensus on how to proceed. Not wanting to permanently fracture her committee or force a preferred option, the chair searches for a way to achieve some level of consensus in order to move forward on the issue.
