Summary:
This real-world ethics case is based on personal communications with a CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) possessing 35 years of experience with a global leader in consumer-packaged goods.A small group of investors established Waters Paper Corporation (WPC), a publicly traded company in the late 1800s, to convert the Upper-Midwest's abundant forests into paper products. To support surgeons in World War I, the company developed casi-cotton, an absorbent cotton substitute, that would later provide the basis for the first disposable handkerchief (SneezEase) and feminine hygiene product (SanEase). Through the 1950s, WPC executives concentrated on organic domestic growth, followed by several decades of international expansion. By 2013, through aggressive acquisition of personal care companies, WPC became a worldwide leader in personal care products with annual revenue of $20 billion and 42,000 employees.
