- Summary:
- The case is about U.S.-based Blink Health LLC, an e-commerce service platform, founded in 2015 by brothers Geoffrey and Matthew Chaiken. The objective of Blink was to make prescription drugs affordable for patients, especially those who had expensive copay plans. Blink directly negotiated drug prices with drugmakers, and unlike pharmacy benefit managers, passed discounts to patients. It listed the price of medicine on its website and made a particular drug available at different pharmacy stores at a standard price, which, because of the lack of regulation of the pharmaceutical sector, varied from pharmacy to pharmacy. GoodRx was the biggest competitor of Blink, which, by allying with pharmacy benefit managers, offered discount coupons to patients with no insurance plans. In 2020, the U.S. government, however, was planning to regulate pharmaceutical pricing, eliminating the role of GoodRx or Blink as price negotiators. What competitive advantage did Blink have over players such as GoodRx? Was the co-founders' business model sustainable, or was it prone to dismissal subject to the U.S. government's policies in the pharma sector? How can Blink overcome the challenges of having a sustainable business model?
