Joanne Rowland was excited. She was leading the implementation of a new medication delivery technology for use in hospitals, and the change readiness assessment from the first pilot hospital has just been completed. Safe medication administration is a critical competency for all hospitals and implementing this new technology successfully is an important goal for Ms. Rowland and her organization. The purpose of this case is to assist Ms. Rowland in reviewing the results from the first pilot hospital to identify its readiness for this new technology. This case focuses on the identification of employee attitudes and perceptions supporting or limiting the implementation of a technical medication delivery solution in a regional hospital. Although Ms. Rowland was excited about the potential benefits of this new bar code assisted medication administration technology to improve medication administration safety, she was also aware of its high cost, the need for it to be totally integrated into the medication delivery chain to ensure a positive impact, and the challenges with implementing new technology in hospitals from a change management perspective. As a result of these risks, her organization wanted to pilot the implementation of their new system in a small number of hospitals. Moreover, to ensure the success of these pilot implementations, Ms. Rowland needed to assess the current medication system delivery and problems in each hospital, as well as identify the issues with respect to change management. Based on her medication delivery expertise, Ms. Rowland developed a hospital-based assessment for medication delivery issues. As she felt less confident with her change management expertise, Ms. Rowland contracted with a management consulting firm to design the change readiness assessment.
