- 1988 war ein Jahr dynamischen Wandels. In ihrer Politik gegenüber der DDR sah sich die Bundesregierung mit der wachsenden Instabilität des SED-Regimes konfrontiert. Gleichzeitig bewegten sich die übrigen Ostblock-Staaten, allen voran die UdSSR, politisch und wirtschaftlich auf den Westen zu. Auch die internationale Schuldenkrise, der sowjetische Rückzug aus Afghanistan sowie die Beziehungen zu Syrien und Iran forderten die Bonner Diplomatie.
- 1988 was a year of dynamic transformation. In its policies toward the DDR, West Germany was confronted with the mounting instability of the East German regime. At the same time, the remaining East bloc states, especially the USSR, were moving politically and economically toward the West. The international debt crisis, Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, and relations with Syria and Iran all challenged Bonn's diplomacy.
