Summary:
The bicentenary of the Independence of Brazil provides the opportunity to rethink this historical process. "Atos de revolta" (Acts of revolt) focuses on a series of uprisings, riots, and insurrections that preceded that time or that occurred in subsequent decades, during the First and Second Reigns and the Regency period. To address the various imaginaries of the country the exhibition presents contemporary artistic references and colonial objects related to the Guarani War (1753-56), to the Inconfidência Mineira (1789), to the Pernambuco Revolution (1817), to the Independence of Bahia (1822), to Cabanagem (1835-40), to the Farroupilha Revolution (1835-45), to the Revolta de Vassouras (1839) and to Balaiada (1838-41), among others. Brazilian artists, from different generations and geographies, were invited to think about these narratives. By addressing the conflicts of the colonial system, the exhibition reveals the contradictions of Brazilian historiography, which produced erasures of decisive characters, especially of black, indigenous and female populations. The works presented respond to five conceptual axes that offer reading keys for certain events: the figure of the hero and the position of political leadership; symbolic constructions (flags, anthems, coats of arms); the modes of organization and their relation to systems of rights, the definition of territories and the processes of production and circulation of value.
