- Summary:
- "Parents bear primary responsibility for socializing children into the broader social fabric that binds us together as a species. If there are two distinct ways to interact with others, then it is parents' job to promote children's use of prosocial behavior while deterring their use of aggression and other forms of coercion. By helping children develop and use-successfully and routinely-prosocial forms of behavior, children grow to become healthy, law abiding members of their community. This book focuses on parents whose children are displaying aggressive behavior and the practitioners trying to help them. It is a guide to both the process and the practice of parent therapy when working with parents of aggressive children. Importantly, the book is not meant to serve as a treatment manual; instead, it is a distillation of robust principles commonly found in evidence-based parenting interventions. The book is also heavily informed by findings from developmental psychology and the science of parenting and family systems. For those practitioners who are just beginning to work with parents of aggressive children, it would help to be familiar with the basic components of an evidence-based protocol such as that found in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy or the Incredible Years or, at minimum, to have ongoing supportive supervision from a provider who has that expertise. For the more experienced practitioner, this book provides a useful description of how skilled clinicians can use their knowledge and experience to work with parents of aggressive children."--(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).
