- Summary:
- A pinnacle of grand opera, Verdi's spectacular tale of ancient Egypt has appeared more than 1,100 times on the Met stage--with generations of extraordinary sopranos appearing as the title character. In this 1968 radio broadcast, recorded in the company's second season in Lincoln Center, Gabriella Tucci is the Ethiopian princess caught between love of country and the man she loves. The all-star cast also features tenor James McCracken as the Egyptian warrior Radamès, mezzo-soprano Irene Dalis as the pharaoh's imperious and haughty daughter Amneris, and baritone Sherrill Milnes as Aida's father, Amonasro. Dynamic maestro Thomas Schippers takes the podium to conduct one of the repertory's most thrilling and impressive masterpieces.
