In Tournai, for almost seven centuries, the Pont des Trous has punctuated the course of the Scheldt with its mass. Contrary to its name, this work was never a bridge, but a water gate, a fortification protecting the city. It knew its hour of glory very early on during the siege of Tournai in 1340, at the start of the Hundred Years War. In the epic battles that took place there, the Virgin, it seems, got involved and, as it should be for a city dedicated to Mary, the city was not taken. Then, the work became part of a definitive way - let's dare the word - in the urban landscape. An aging icon that knew how to make itself loved, somewhat cumbersome to be sure, it was respected in extremis by the Germans in 1918, but not by the English in a hurry in 1940. sure, of its authenticity, especially as it had on occasion been adapted to the standards of river transport. But what did it matter: the revived icon immediately won back the hearts of the people of Tournai. This adventure, this 'legend', the book Celebration of the Bridge of Holes wants to remember by offering an iconography either known, but here reproduced better than ever, or unknown and therefore to discover absolutely, accompanied by texts and testimonies. As for the new Bridge of Holes which rises before our eyes, it will just be mentioned in fine. À Tournai, depuis quasi sept siècles, le Pont des Trous ponctue de sa masse le cours de l'Escaut. Contrairement à son appellation, cet ouvrage n'a jamais été un pont, mais bien une porte d'eau, une fortification protégeant la ville. Il connut très tôt son heure de gloire lors du siège de Tournai en 1340, au début de la guerre de Cent Ans. Aux combats épiques qui s'y déroulèrent, la Vierge, paraît-il, se mêla et, comme il se devait pour une cité vouée à Marie, la ville ne fut pas prise. Ensuite, l'ouvrage s'inscrivit de manière définitive - osons le mot - dans le paysage urbain. Icône vieillissante qui savait se faire aimer, quelque peu encombrante certes, elle fut respectée in extremis par les Allemands en 1918, mais pas par les Anglais pressés en 1940. On reconstruisit alors cet emblème dont personne n?imaginait se passer, au risque, bien sûr, de son authenticité, d'autant qu'il avait à l?occasion été adapté aux normes du transport fluvial. Mais qu'importait : 'icône ressuscitée regagna d?emblée le cœur des Tournaisiens. De cette aventure, de cette 'légende', l'ouvrage Célébration du Pont des Trous veut faire mémoire en proposant une iconographie soit connue, mais ici reproduite mieux que jamais, soit méconnue et donc à découvrir absolument, accompagnée de textes et de témoignages. Quant au nouveau Pont des Trous qui s'élève sous nos yeux, il sera juste évoqué in fine.
