Summary:
All the plays in this volume were written and put into production between the summer of 1891 and February 1895. Apart from The Importance of Being Earnest, these plays have consistently been subjected to adverse criticism as successful works of art, even where their value as entertainment, as vehicles for Wilde's wit, has been recognised. They are more than they appear to be, and they continue to appeal to late twentieth-century audiences in spite of the largely obtuse commentaries of generations of theatre critics.
