- Summary:
- The catalogue is an exhaustive review and investigation of all the pieces that make up the Mapuche Silverware Collection of the MAPA. In 1946 the Universidad de Chile acquired the collection formed by Pedro Doyharcabal and which today is part of the holdings of the Museo de Arte Popular Americano Tomás Lago. "The close to 230 pieces, whose origin and elaboration dates back to the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, comprise part of the most representative typologies of this art of the Mapuches: trarülongko, shikill, trapelakucha, chaway and also little-known pieces such as the kitra and payuntuwe. (HKB Translation) -Page 17.
- The present catalogue is the outcome of the research "Colección Mapuche del MAPA: Investigación, salvaguarda y difusión de una Colección Patrimonial". Since its foundation in 1944 and to date, MAPA preserves in its deposits a unique collection of Mapuche pieces, consisting of wooden objects, textiles -clothing and ceremonial-, silver, leather, various vegetable fibers, stone or clay. Each of these objects, be they basketry, arrowheads, grain vessels, musical instruments or weapons of war, enclose in their form and counterforms a mode of expression, the fabric of a culture, the invention of a system of life and a worldview always linked to the arcana of Fire, Air, Water and Mother Earth. "It is a book/catalog that is twinned with the previous issue entitled "Colección de Platería Mapuche del MAPA" and that was recently published by the same editorial line of the museum." (HKB Translation) --Page 10.
