Summary:

The year 2019 marked 180 years since photography made its appearance. To commemorate the arrival of photography in Mexico, and at the same time, to assess how much progress has been made in recent years in the research on its history and understanding, the colloquium "A 180 años de la fotografía en México: fotografía documental, documento histórico, social y lenguaje visual" was held in June 2019 at the Instituto de Investigaciones Dr. Jose Maria Luis Mora (Tlalpan, Mexico City). The book contains the work of sixteen researchers of photography, from pioneers such as Aurelio de los Reyes and Carlos Martínez Assad, to those who now push for new perspectives and interpretations such as Marion Gautreau. The texts are divided into three sections: "Primeval lights and shadows", where there are works on the first years of the photography; "A moment for history", that brings together works of reflection on methods and forms of analysis in relation to the photo and, the last section, "From photochemistry to memes", that contains works from specific cases and that give us an overview of the photo and its uses from the twentieth century to the present day.
