- Summary:
- Manuel Paz is the name of a hitherto little-known Lima 18th century artist who painted the large-format canvas at the age of 18: the Baptism of Christ (1749), for the then new temple of San Lázaro, rebuilt shortly after the cataclysm that left the city of Lima in ruins. Still preserved in the temple of San Lázaro del Rímac, this work is still the historical, aesthetic and faith emblem of its religious heritage. Its restoration and enhancement in 2016 motivated the development of interdisciplinary work between art history, conservation and restoration, and theology. Three looks through three specialists who, in an integral way, let us know the precise meaning that the work had in its time, the sensitive motivations that its young author had and the parishioners of San Lázaro, the Creole identity and orphan condition of the painter, as well as about his reputed fame as "Intelligent Master of painting" in the capital; about the aesthetic magnitude of the canvas through its methodical restoration, as well as the theological symbolism it had yesterday and today in the spiritual and institutional life of the former hospital and temple of San Lázaro.
