Summary:
"This volume, one of the early Latin translations from the original Greek version, is set in the form of a "symposium" or gathering held by 21 scholars around 220 A.D. Including extensive discussions related to gastronomy and methods of presenting a banquet in the ancient Greek tradition, the work is one of the most famous accounts of feasting. The symposium is divided into 15 books in which the names and accomplishments of many famous epicures and scholars are mentioned. Here, Athanaeus recalls the various kinds of cheesecakes which are described in classical literature. This particular copy of Dipnosophistarum is from the private library of Georges Vicaire, the noted French bibliographer and cookbook collector. Includes index at start of book. Printed in Basileae (Basel, Switzerland)."
