Summary:
Description: Findings from The Rose Company 2001 production of Cymbeline at The Globe, written in 2002. The documents include general rehearsal notes, details about verse, character work and music and notes after the run throughs and previews of the production. The general rehearsal notes stress that 'the stage is an empty space' and that 'the actors play every role and create every environment of the play without the help of scenery or costumes'. There is also focus placed on helping the 'actors find a way to make the rhythms of Shakespeare's language an entirely organic element of their own work'. In terms of the music, an interesting point is made that the composer 'noted that in Japan, each day of the week is associated with a different element' and that 'she wanted to create a score using elements as the framework'. The use of the pillars is also discussed and it is argued that they should not be used in a 'pseudo-naturalistic' way and should instead 'exist within the reality of the Globe only', with their 'purpose' being 'to hold up the heavens above earth, not to be transformed into something else'.
