- Summary:
- Description: This is an interview with Barbara Eden (Assistant Clerk 1985-1988 and Livery 1988) and Peter King (Treasurer 1938-1991 and Livery 1952) recorded in Carlisle. The interview begins with Eden referring to her initial lack of knowledge about the Livery Companies upon assuming a role as Secretary to the Clerk in 1979. She also notes her immediate awareness of the depth of the financial difficulties faced by the Company which King also shared. Acknowledgement that there was a mounting need to generate new income drove Eden to propose that the Stationers' Hall be used to generate the necessary funds. Eden notes how Richard Haselden drove the marketing programme for this, letting the Hall on a casual basis which drastically increased the gross income. King proceeds to pick up the interview, noting his own career history, beginning with his attendance of the London School of Printing, his military service, and building up a family printing business before becoming clothed by the Stationers' Company in 1952. He recalls selling his business in 1969 and becoming close friends with Harold White, a advisor to the Court. King then discusses being invited to be assistant Treasurer to Geoffrey Hooper, and changes made in that role (such as forming a Committee of the Future, and various funds). Further financial problems caused by quarterage, repairs, and maintenance plans at the Stationers' Hall are discussed at length, as are prominent figures met there, and developments made to the Hall.
