- Founded in 1855 as the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, Berea College's commitment to interracial education was overturned in 1904 by the Kentucky Legislature's passage of the Day Law. This collection contains numerous newspaper cuttings relating to Berea's status as an institution admitting both white and black students and the problems it thus encountered under Kentucky's segregationist laws and due to popular prejudice.
