Summary:
Electronic reproduction of the papers of William Wilberforce (1759-1833) and related slavery & anti-slavery materials from Wilberforce House, Hull. These include a slave trader's log-book of 1764 and original slave receipts and punishment records. There are substantial sets of plantation records relating to Jamaica, Barbados, Berbice and Demerara providing details of slaves and livestock. Also covered are full proceedings before the Privy Council on the subject of compulsory manumission in the colonies of Demerara and Berbice. The collection of pro- and anti-slavery ephemera features many items on the treatment of slaves, posters, illustrations, Sir James Edward Alexander's "Comparative slavery, or, A sketch of the present condition of Negroes under Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, French, American and British Masters" - an unpublished treatise of 1832 - as well as other items on Dutch Guiana, Surinam, Cuba, Brazil, Martinique, Guadaloupe, Santo Domingo, Trinidad, Louisiana, Tunis and politics in London.
