- Summary:
- An account by a white woman of the execution of Henry Jackson, a slave, in Decatur, Georgia, on 3 November 1858. He had been convicted of raping Miss Gurley, a girl of 11 or 12 years of age. A large crowd gathered to watch the hanging of the prisoner. Slave-owners sent along their slaves to witness "an important lesson". The work contains a description of the prisoner's last speech, the gallows, his coffin and its journey back to the jail. The author raises the possibility that the physicians would take advantage of the body for anatomical experiments.
