- Summary:
- Cherokee Voices was published in a single run of six issues by the communications centre of the Cherokee Nation and funded by a grant from the Office of Native American Programs. Although the Cherokee Nation News had been the official publication of the Nation since 1968, this was distributed only to subscribers. To reach a wider audience, Cherokee Voices started as a newsletter and operated concurrently with The Cherokee Nation News until 1977 when both merged to form The Cherokee Advocate in February 1977. Principal Chief Swimmer submitted a letter to the Cherokee people in each issue, and other articles covered local, political and economic developments. Throughout its run, Robby Robinson - Director of the Cherokee Communication Center - took charge of the publication while Wes Studie acted as editor of the final three issues. Cherokee Voices was never intended to be a long running title, merely a filler publication that could lead to the establishment of a permanent news source.
