Summary:
Established by Hubert Guy in La Mesa, California in 1970, The Indian Trader had a strong focus on contemporary Indigenous arts. Containing classifieds and announcements of related events, it became a key publication for buyers and sellers. The Trader also focussed heavily on the history and heritage of Indigenous tribes, primarily in the Southwest, though - when the paper moved to Billings, Montana - this geographical focus would shift to the Plains. After returning to Gallup, New Mexico in 1980 the newspaper took on a much stronger editorial bent, including reports of legal, legislative and social news that would interest artists and craftsmen.
