Biography/History:
John Kroll - known as Jack Kroll - was a Newsweek drama and film critic. His career spanned 37 years - more than half the publication's existence. .
Summary:
Writer-editor Jack Kroll interviews filmmakers Albert and David Maysles in 1969 about what they called at that time a "new technique of natural movie making, Direct Cinema". Program includes excerpts from their feature length film The Salesman (about door to door sale of The Bible to poor people in Boston). The Maysles formed a two man crew and followed the salesmen around in an early example of "cinema verite." Conversation topics include how the Maysles actually filmed, how they got the subjects to agree to being filmed, and their reaction to seeming to be reformers: "We're not trying to make audiences feel anything....our films are their own truth...the way we saw it...we're salesmen too, always selling something..." .
