- Based on Gay Cheney's book, <i>Basic Concepts in Modern Dance</i>, this video is an overview of modern dance training that takes the viewer from the basic elements of technique through improvisation and performance. Along the way Gay Cheney discusses and illustrates such concepts as the development of kinesthetic sense, the importance of breath and gravity, and the use of the abstract elements of shape, space, time, and energy. Various improvisation techniques are demonstrated and the video concludes with student choreographers being coached by their teachers and receiving evaluation and feedback after performance.
