Biography/History:
Hardin Burnely-Campbell was a Scottish Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) who fought in the Afghan Wars and traveled extensively after his retirement in 1882.
Summary:
This typescript is an unpublished account of Burnley-Campbell's travels through Constantinople, Lebanon, and Palestine which he delivered before the Glendaruel Burns Club and Literary Society on February 7, 1907. His trip took place from February 28 to April 13, 1906, and according to his introduction, covered nearly 8000 miles by sea and land, stopping in France, Italy, the Islands of Sicily, and Corsica, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Palestine and Egypt (f.1). His 74-page typescript focuses on the places of most interest to him and is a detailed account. The volume is bound in quarter leather with the title, The Eastern Mediterranean and Palestine," stamped in gilt. There are 11 notes laid in between the cover and flyleaf, 3 photographs after folio 17, and 1 note after folio 74.
