- Summary:
- At the final concert of the Verbier Festival in 2013, the famous American Kent Nagano conducts Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, performed by the Verbier Festival Orchestra. This concert, which closes the 20th edition of the Verbier Festival, celebrates another birthday at the same time: the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, which caused a scandal after its world premiere in 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. An avant-gardist work of the 20th century, The Rite of Spring was nicknamed the "Massacre of Spring" when it was premiered in 1913. It was only acclaimed one year after its premiere, in 1914, by Parisian audiences. Indeed Stravinsky attempted to create a dangerous musical form, by introducing elements of contrast, not relevant of the symphony, however he left an incredible musical work. With power and magnificence, the composer truly created a kind of atmosphere, a glory to the Nature, in which rites of Spring completely enthrall us. Under Kent Nagano's energic baton, the Verbier Festival Orchestra -- known for its passionate renditions -- perform this work in a highly powerful and magical way.
