An impressive performance of The Magic Flute at the Salzburg Festival, starring Diana Damrau as the Queen of the Night and René Pape as Sarastro. Since its creation in 1791, The Magic Flute has encountered great success. Some of its arias, such as the Queen of the Night's aria, are some of the most popular arias of the operatic repertoire. There are several reasons that explain this success. First, the score is highly demanding, especially when it comes to the famous Queen of the Night's aria ("Der Holle Rache Kocht In Meinen Herzen," Act II). Diana Damrau is most certainly one of the most eminent interpreters of this role. The score is very modern too. This opera or singspiel written in 1791 in German previews the Romantic era that developed during the next century. Last but not least, the play seems to aim at entertaining: an exotic setting with flutes and snakes, magic elements, a love story between the sweet Pamina and the prince Tamino, comical scenes ... This effect is strengthened by Pierre Audi's staging and Jorge Jara's colorful costumes. But behind the humor, The Magic Flute hides a great depth. The writing of The Magic Flute was contemporary to the one of Mozart's Requiem in D Minor. In The Magic Flute, Mozart chose to create dark characters, such as Sarastro or the Queen of the Night, a perverse and vindictive woman ... The themes of secrecy, initiation, trials and blindness refer to the freemasons that Mozart joined in 1784.
