Summary:
Book that brings together the essays of 21 internationally recognized specialists, in which the current discussions around the art of indigenous peoples are the main topic. This publication is also the memoir of the exhibition and the state of the art of the peoples today, where the reader will find a multiplicity of voices about what it means to be indigenous in a colonized world, as well as the importance of the aesthetics of indigenous cultures, their philosophy and worldview as a legacy and present of national artistic expression. The Secretaría de Cultura and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura, through the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, propose with this exhibition a paradigm shift in the appreciation of the art of the peoples of Mexico. They invite us to overcome the discriminatory, exoticizing and welfarist prejudices around these arts and break with the categories invented to segregate them from hegemonic art. The exhibited works are an expression of the knowledge, stories, thoughts, and identities of the creative communities and partly embody their multiple ways of perceiving, feeling, understanding and living the world, giving rise to genuine and vigorous styles within the contemporary artistic context. It has been 70 years since this museum has presented a sample of this nature. This opens channels of discussion and replication for peoples to generate the disruptions of the twenty-first century and lead the representation of themselves from their perspective and their voice.
