Summary:
The texts deal with the relationship between political conditions and sculptural production, a relationship materialized in two monuments of relevance located in Santiago, whose historical-temporal situation would allow us to understand the way in which these political wills and monumental production intersect, inherently related to the administration of power and its form of representation in the public space. We identify in the Monument to the General Schneider (1974) and the Monument to Salvador Allende (2000) the will of the State of Chile to produce a memory that takes shape in the monument. In this sense, both sculptures, understood as historical objects, concentrate relationships, forces and crosses that speak of the history of power in Chile. These are two bodies that mark two historical moments: on the one hand, the socialist project of the Unidad Popular that begins in 1970 and ends in 1973 with the coup d'état, and on the other, the arrival to the government of the Partido Socialista in 2000 after a decade of transition to democracy, and which coincides precisely with the moment of the inauguration of the Monument to Allende in the Plaza de la Constitución.
