Summary:
The book reviews the extensive multidisciplinary career of the feminist artist. Born in Chillán in 1949, Eugenia Vargas-Pereira has developed her work between Chile and abroad. In 1972 she entered the Montana Institute for the Arts (Missoula, Montana, United States) to study photography, finishing her training in 1975. Since 1983 she has had a large number of exhibitions and has received numerous awards. In order to review her work according to the current context and under a critical eye, this publication of the Atlas label was born, led by Mane Adaro (editor) and Pamela Alvarado-Álvarez (coordinator and producer), with funding Fondart Nacional 2021. Without being a chronological reading, the volume takes a look at the artist's work, reviewing her early work in Mexico in the mid-1970s, until the Chilean revolt of 2019-20. Thus, in more than 75 photographs, concepts linked to the environmental crisis, nature, photoperformance and cultural criticism can be appreciated. While the texts correspond to feminist academics and theorists, Alejandra Castillo, Julia Antivilo, Paz López and Nathalie Goffard. Eugenia Vargas-Pereira is permanently working on the construction of a feminist female memory. From photography, performance, installation and video installation, the author places the body, sets up a position, a being/being/doing of multi-layered and diverse memory, in constant opposition to essentialist and anthropocentric discoursesʺ, explains Adaro in the book's foreword.
