Summary:
The religious paintings of the Lorenzo family (Lucas and his sons: Santiago, Lucas jr. Nicolas, Jesus, Aureliano and Carlota; and Luis Fernando, son of Aureliano) are a mixture of Roman-Byzantine paintings (on wooden boards) with Nahua heritage. From Xalitla (Estado de Guerrero), the Lorenzoœs are Nahuas from the region of the High (river) Balsas and their work alludes to the Roman-Christian iconography derived from the popular Catholicism of the community that has syncretic indigenous elements and Orthodox Christian tradition. The authors of these paintings should be considered contemporary geniuses of Mexican indigenous painting.ʺ (HKB Translation) --Page [7]
