Summary:
As the largest British colony in Asia, India served as a stopping point for refugees from Asia and Africa. The files of the British India Office document the evacuation of civilians from Hungary, the Balkans, Russia, Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Cyprus, Palestine, Indochina, Thailand, Burma, Hong Kong, and China to India; the treatment of prisoners of war; the internment of German and Japanese nationals (including missionaries) and other civilian internees in India; civilian exchanges with other powers; and the repatriation of Eastern European as well as German, Austrian and Italian nationals. This collection provides insight into a unique form of refugee relief and resettlement, as a colonial power transformed one of its colonies into a refugee way station for expatriate citizens and allies.
