Summary:
Three years after the Ministry of Education was created. In Meiji 6 (1873), the Monbusho decided it needed a Literature textbook for young children. The first two volumes of the 小學讀本 are a direct translation of the Wilson Reader. Because it was a direct translation, it was slightly awkward in Japanese. In Meiji 7, the unnatural Japanese was edited out, and the images were edited to be <U+001c>less western . This version appears to be the original from Meiji 6 - interpreted by Eri Maeda (HSP intern).
Notes:
Woodblock prints of text and various images, such as coins, shopping, transportation and portraits.
On double leaves, Fukurotoji style (bound-pocket, pouch binding).
