Henry van de Velde nous décrit son périple et celui de sa famille au cours de quarante années mouvementées de l?histoire européenne (1917-1957), à travers la Suisse où il se lie avec Kirchner et Romain Rolland, les Pays-Bas où il projette un musée pour la famille Kröller-Müller, et la Belgique où il est appelé en 1926 pour diriger un nouvel Institut des Arts décoratifs destiné à réitérer à Bruxelles l?expérience de son école de Weimar, devancière du Bauhaus.00En dépit des polémiques attisées par Victor Horta, son école s?ouvre en 1927 dans l?ancienne abbaye de La Cambre. Elle rassemble un corps enseignant d?élite dont la pédagogie, centrée sur la pratique en atelier, influe de manière durable sur la production du pays et bénéficie d?une reconnaissance internationale avec les pavillons de la Belgique aux Expositions de Paris 1937 et de New York 1939.00Parallèlement, il édifie la bibliothèque de l?Université de Gand (1933-1940), avec son ± silo à livres ?, et devient conseiller artistique auprès des Chemins de Fer belges et des Malles Ostende Douvres. Ce rôle, il l?exerce aussi auprès du ministère des Travaux publics avant d?accepter une mission analogue, en 1940, au Commissariat Général à la Restauration du Pays, placé sous l?autorité de l?administration militaire allemande.00Après-guerre, déprimé par des enquêtes qui se soldent par un non-lieu, il s?installe en Suisse, à Oberägeri, où Alfred Roth et Max Bill veillent sur lui. Il y rédige ses mémoires et reçoit des personnalités comme Giedion, Neutra, Aalto ou Philip Johnson, intéressées par cet autodidacte, protagoniste de l?Art nouveau, désormais reconnu comme l?un des pères de l?architecture moderne du XXe siècle.

Henry van de Velde describes his journey and that of his family during forty turbulent years of European history (1917-1957), through Switzerland where he became friends with Kirchner and Romain Rolland, the Netherlands where he plans a museum for the Kröller-Müller family, and Belgium where he was called in 1926 to direct a new Institute of Decorative Arts intended to reiterate in Brussels the experience of his Weimar school, the predecessor of the Bauhaus.00Despite the heated controversy by Victor Horta, his school opened in 1927 in the former abbey of La Cambre. It brings together an elite teaching body whose pedagogy, centered on workshop practice, has a lasting influence on the country's production and enjoys international recognition with the Belgian pavilions at the 1937 Paris and New York exhibitions. 1939.00At the same time, he built the library of the University of Ghent (1933-1940), with its ± book silo?, and became artistic adviser to the Belgian Railways and the Malles Ostende Douvres. He also exercised this role with the Ministry of Public Works before accepting a similar mission, in 1940, at the General Commission for the Restoration of the Country, placed under the authority of the German military administration.00After the war, depressed by investigations which ended in a dismissal, he moved to Switzerland, to Oberägeri, where Alfred Roth and Max Bill watched over him.
