Summary:
This is a manuscript fragment of a leaf from the Maḥzor from the portion of the four ceremonial Sabbaths which precede Passover; the surviving text is from the liturgy of the Sabbath of the Shekalim, specifically portions of the piyut inserted into the Chazzan’s repetition of Musaf (the anonymous septet (שבעתא) opening with אשכול אווי תאות כל נפש recited before each conclusion). The surviving text begins with פנה נדמה לעופר and continues to שתעלנו בשמחה לארצינו (from the Musaf liturgy; recto), and picks up with הון וכבוד ועושר until the end of the second to last stanza (כסף שקלי כפורים / אור פניך etcetera); according to the division of text in this surviving portion of the leaf, the original leaf was probably double the height of the current size.
Notes:
Ms. leaf.
Title supplied by cataloger.
Layout: Written in stanzas of four lines each; paragraph captions built-in to text block; refrains and regular liturgical text centered.
Script: Written in a German Gothic square script (typical of 13th century Ashkenazic liturgy), with paragraph captions in large majuscules; piyut text vocalized.
Origin: Written in Germany, either at the second half of the 13th century of the beginning of the 14th century.
Item mounted on thick blue card, cut to size; tear at center affecting text; item likely survived in a binding.
