Summary:
Rivera tracks works and authors dedicated to science fiction; he educates us about the centrality of this modality in the letters of Puerto Rico; and fixes the inaugural coordinates for the study of it. Tapia y Rivera sets the standard and the modality develops clandestinely, with a cosmopolitan impulse and invoking British, American, Soviet, Argentine, and Cuban legacies. Rivera listens to works by Tapia, W. Lloréns, P. Cabiya, R. Acevedo, R. Soto, J. Torres, M. Adrover, José Borges, G. López, and DC Acevedo, stars of the area. He suggests that the works are distracted by the present, the future and the past, that multiple, rugged, viral, subatomic, thermodynamic, nuclear imaginaries run through them. The country, the region and the planet coexist with the apocalypse, the disaster, the chimerical cruelty of financial capitalism, technomodernity. They portray a world at war in which humanity turns against otherness, the ecosystem, planetary life, or reason itself. Rivera declares a bet, as a common thread that crosses the imaginary of disaster in science fiction: rescue, escape through options: solidarity, friendship and love (let's think of eros, ápape, pragma, storge, philia, ludus). This book opens a field and reconstitutes it.
