- 本书汇集作者对于史学理论与史学史的部分论述,分为四章,即"史学理论探析","史家史书考析","史学专题考考论","中外史学比较".第一章深入考查了中国史学的起源问题,指出中国史学诞生于公元前841年,同一于中国上古连续纪年的产生.又阐述了中国史学史和史学理论的学术体系.第二章考订"世本"非先秦之书,乃西汉刘向将先秦时期的零散文篇加以汇合,分类所编成;考订"越绝书"成书于东汉安帝延光元年即公元122年,一举破解了这个从唐代就聚讼纷纭的难题.第三章,指出中国传统史学具有官方史学与私家史学两条相互联系的发展轨道,其间互动,互补也互有排抑,这是古代中国史学得以异常繁荣的主要原因之一.考证了后金政权满文档册开始记录的起始时间是努尔哈赤天命元年(公元1616年),考述了清朝国史馆的建置,组成与修史活动,等等.第四章通过中西,中日史学的比较研究,认为并历史学的内在矛盾是记史求真与治史致用的矛盾,焦点在于孰为第一宗旨.
