Summary:

This case study draws on my doctoral research, which explored the experiences of mothers abused by their now-adult children. This included how mothers articulated their experiences, their journeys of help-seeking and the barriers they faced in doing so, and their perceptions of effective support. I conducted unstructured in-depth interviews inspired by the life story method with 11 mothers, who had self-identified as having experienced or experiencing some form of abusive behaviors from their now-adult children. Inspired by narrative analysis and, in particular, by a dialogic/performative approach, I paid close attention to the co-constructed nature of interview narratives, the relationship between teller and listener, as well as specific performative aspects of language. Doing so, I was able to attend to my participants' narrative resources in the identity-shaping process of storytelling. This approach helped reveal participants' narratives as performances of identities of survival, intimately linked to their identities of motherhood.In this case study, I discuss the practicalities of applying a dialogic/performative approach to data analysis, the benefits of such an approach, and some practical challenges I faced in the process.
