Summary:

This is a project where we performed a survey experiment in four Western European countries: Austria, England, Ireland, and Sweden. In the project, we were interested in voters' evaluations of specific aspects of the electoral process. Instead of relying on data from public opinion organizations and broad survey questions such as how satisfied citizens are with the way democracy works in their country, we decided to design our own survey experiment, which included more specific questions on voters' evaluations of the electoral process as well as an experimental component to test causal claims. We designed an experiment that allows us to examine the impact of two crucial steps of the electoral process, namely, the voting procedure and the results of the elections. In the first step, the voters cast their ballots, and in the second step, the election results were announced. By manipulating factors in both steps, we can isolate the effect of each factor on respondents' evaluations. We find it crucial to perform the experiment in countries with different electoral systems to check if the treatments have the same effects in different contexts, and we therefore performed the experiment in four different Western democracies. The results show that respondents' evaluations of different aspects of the electoral process are similar in all four countries, which is an important and surprising finding. During the project, there were several methodological and data challenges to handle. We describe and comment on how we handled these challenges.
