Summary:
My research evaluates how supportive Americans are of the Child Tax Credit and whether demographic characteristics like race and socioeconomic class shape perceptions of whether recipient families are deserving of government support. This project uses a survey experiment to test whether altering the types of families featured in news stories about the Child Tax Credit affect Americans' support for the policy. This case study explores the methodological successes and challenges associated with survey experimentation. My discussion provides advice for gathering national survey data using low-cost options like Amazon Mechanical Turk. It also discusses experimental design, examines the importance of developing thoughtful experimental conditions, and provides guidance for evaluating respondents' attention in completing the survey questionnaire.
