Summary:

Considered as one of the best expressions of the Andean baroque style, the Cathedral San Francisco de Asis of Ayaviri was built in the late 17th century by the parish priest Juan de la Borda with the support of indigenous labor and declared a National Monument of Peru in 1941. The monumental building, which houses large canvases by the indigenous artist Isidoro Francisco de Moncada (active in the second half of the 18th century), is a site of great cultural, spiritual and artistic richness that, finally, and after a long and edifying path traveled by the architects of its restoration and within the framework of a diligent project, has recovered its complete value. The integral restoration project that started on June 2017 included the architectural structure, works of art, marquetry, altarpieces, walls, ceiling, façade, lighting system, sound system, gardens, and exterior grilles
