- Summary:
- This new book presents state-of-the-art concept and approaches to the theory and practice of alternatives to animal testing in laboratory research. It reports on the latest progress in developing and evaluating alternatives to experimental animals. The editors and their contributors focus on the three Rs of alternatives to animal testing: Reduction in the number of animals used; Refinement in minimizing discomfort, maximizing information obtained from each animal, and utilizing animals lower on the phylogenetic tree; and Replacement of animals with in vitro cultures, chemical systems, and computer models. This timely book extends the traditional three Rs to include a fourth "R": Responsibility to the commitment of the pursuit of alternatives for reasons of humaneness, time, and economics.
