Summary:
This is a manuscript of Amānāt wa-al-iʻtiqādāt (known in Hebrew as "ha-Emunot ṿe-deʻot", this title from the 12th century Hebrew translation by Judah b. Saul ibn Tibbon (1120-1190)), in a critical edition translated into German and prepared for eventual printing. One edition used for the manuscript (Barasch and Steinschneider) was the edition edited by Judah Leib Ben Zeʼev (Berlin, 1789; from paging sources in the text; for example, marginal citation on f. 207r). Julius Barasch began the work using German in Hebrew characters and continued in German characters (possibly due to a request of a publisher). Steinschneider's work includes an index of Biblical quotes (f. 296r-309v) and of Talmudic and Midrashic quotations (f. 310r-311v); notes referencing Sa'adia's ha-Pedut ṿeha-purḳan (f. 313r), and variants and errata on Ben Ze'ev's edition (f. 314r).
Notes:
Ms. codex.
Title from f.1r; Book of Doctrines and Beliefs supplied by cataloger.
Layout: Written in one column per page, mostly of 23-26 lines; Barasch portion mostly foliated (and sparsely referenced), and Steinschneider portion with chapter markers (for example, "Saadias I", f. 131r).
Script: Written in a German cursive script (Kurrentschrift), in the hand of Julius Barasch (f. 1r-131r) and the remaining leaves in the hand of Moritz Steinschneider (f. 131r-313r; 313v-322v blank).
Origin: Written in Prague (Malter), begun by Barasch on Friday 24 January 1840 (note in upper margin, f. 11v), completed by Steinschneider Sunday 17 July 1840 (f. 1r).
Binding: Blue-green pasteboard (contemporary); "או"ד Übersetzung" written on note, adhered to front board.
