Biography/History:
Mystic and Halakhic writer from the Sinigaglia rabbinic dynasty, originated in Senigallia, relocated to Ancona; corresponded with Hayyim Joseph David Azulai (1724-1806) on matters of Halakhah and Cabala; authored Abir Yaʻaḳov (on Tractate Keritut; Pisa: Solomon Molcho, 1811) and Shabat shel mi (on Tractate Shabat, begun in 1795 (f. 5r in this manuscript); Livorno: Daniel & Samuel Saadon, 1807); his complete Hebrew name was יעקב שמשון שבתי בן רפאל יששכר מסיניגאליא.
Summary:
Ethical diary and devotional calendar of Jacob Samson Sinigaglia, written without intent to publish; the mystical content includes his meditations and private psalmody with gematrias relevant to his name and the year, for the purpose of soul correction (f. 2r; sums of Psalms completions numbered across the manuscript), progress with recitation of sacred books or passages (such as the eleventh chapter of Tractate Sanhedrin, f. 2v); chronograms for Hebrew years, resulting in a number with a mystical meaning corresponding to the number of times the Psalms were recited (f. 5r: שנת התקס"א שנת י'ש'מ'ר'ה'ו' ; f. 6r: התקס"ה שנת שיר' ה'ש'י'ר'י'ם'; התקס"ו ש[נת] שירו ל'ה' ש'י'ר' חדש). Travel and world events noted include his recording of travels to Livorno and Genoa, as well as the attack of the French Army on Ancona in 1797 (f. 4v). Written in an Italian Hebrew cursive script, mostly in two columns (with the outer column sums of times reciting or studying a text); bound inside modern paper folds.
