Summary:
Leaf from a 14th century parchment Biblical codex, surviving as binding waste, with much of the text of the Song of the Sea present (folio begins on recto with בים סוף (XV:4) until (23) ולא יכלו [לשתות מים ממרה]; verso). The layout of the Song of the Sea in this manuscript is a strict layout, varying from the Ashkenazic custom; for example, hyphenated words are broken apart to adhere to the pattern of one and two words in the inner column (for example, "בים | סוף", line 1); the culmination of the Song (יהוה ימלך לעלם ועד) separated into pairs (verso); כי בא (verse 19) continues in the standard layout (indicating the Song ends at 18); compare the layouts in the Mahzor Vitry (The British Library, London, England Add. 27200, f. 206r), and Vatican Library Urb.ebr.1 (a parchment Hebrew and Aramaic codex dating from 1294; f. 80v-81r). Item damaged by worming.
Notes:
Ms. fragment.
Title supplied by cataloger.
Layout: Written in 20 lines, frame-ruled in drypoint (double vertical bounding lines at inner margin; single vertical bounding line at outer margin); Targum text ruled separately, with text adjoining Biblical text.
Script: Written in an Ashkenazic-Gothic square script, in a neat scribal hand; Targum written in a finer size in a German square script; all script vocalized and with accents and cantillation.
Origin: Written in Germany between 1250 and 1350 (script).
